In 2022, South Korea’s major defense companies achieved the largest arms export of about US$ 14.5 billion, or KRW 19 trillion, to challenge the stronghold of the world’s defense big five—U.S., Russia, France, Germany and China. And there is one small defense company in Korea targeting the international market of small special boats.

VOGO Industries is a Korean defense company that produces diversified lineups of small and medium-sized special vessels such as rigid inflatable boats (RIBs), patrol boats, coastal rescue boats, bullet-proof high-speed boats, diving propellers and submersibles.

The company has produced and delivered 330 special military ships at home and abroad since 2018, winning orders for 10 naval RIBs in the military modernization project promoted by Southeast Asian countries including the Philippines.

The high-speed fleet of Carbon Patrol RIB 1200 exported to the Philippines is the first special ship equipped with carbon composite and diesel outboard in Korea, to which its client expresses high satisfaction, leading to additional delivery under discussion.

The high-speed fleet is designed and built by VOGO Industries, with lightweight and high-intensity hull and communications radar equipment, and is able to travel at the speed of over 45 knots. The company is planning to upgrade the fleet to a new high-speed one using new material plastic and additionally export the product to Southeast and South American countries, along with the Philippines.

Daeyoung MAENG, CEO of VOGO Industries, stated, “Our company outstripped Zodiac of France, a defense powerhouse, in 2015 and was recognized for delivering its high-speed ships to the South American countries.” He added, “We have a number of patents related to marine special ships such as patrol boats, diving propellants, and small submersibles, and we will try to commercialize ships flying over the surface, or so-called WIG, and hydrogen vessels.”

VOGO Industries recently completed the development of the first ship with liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells and began the final test, and plans to hold a liquefied hydrogen technology exchange meeting with Contech Mobility and the Research Institute of Medium & Small Shipbuilding (RIMS) in August to promote the hydrogen fleet.

The Republic of Korea is constantly moving toward an export powerhouse in the defense industry. It is steadily increasing the volume of exports by being recognized for its excellence of defense products around the world. There are small and medium-sized companies that are firmly supported by distinguished technology. The Korea Defense Daily and the Korea Defense Industry Association (KDIA) introduce small and medium-sized companies that are one of the pillars of Korea’s defense industry development as their joint annual project, and the second business they introduce for this year is a small submersible manufacturing company that is considered one of the world’s top three—VOGO Industries.

Jeongwook LIM, director of VOGO Industries, describes advantages of the product, pointing to the fuel tank of a liquefied hydrogen ship that has recently been developed.

One of the world’s top three submersible manufacturers

Founded in 1998, VOGO Industries boasts outstanding technology in designing and manufacturing small and medium-sized special purpose vessels and submersibles. Starting with the delivery of high-speed rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) to the Navy for the first time in Korea, more than 330 small special ships have been designed and produced using fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP), aluminum and carbon fiber.

In the field of small submersibles, in particular, the company is standing shoulder to shoulder with its unrivaled technology as one of the world’s top three manufacturers along with STIDD in the U.S. and JFD in the U.K. It also dominates Korea’s domestic market of manned submersibles powered by lithium batteries and electric propellants.

In the backbone is the technology that has been developed by chasing only one hare at once. Numerous patents and utility models (new technical designs on the shape and structure of goods for practical convenience) prove this, including dry-jet wet hybrid submersibles, water-proof housing for diving ships, submersible propulsion and underwater propulsion devices.

Based on this, following a high-speed boat in 1996, just before the establishment of the corporation, patrol boats and diving boats were localized and delivered to the Army, Navy and Marine Corps in 2000 and 2005. In 2015, a diving propeller was created and delivered to the Marine Corps, and coastal rescue boat was delivered to the maritime police the following year.

Such technology and performance have been nourished to help the company harvest precious fruits. It was awarded the Excellence in Small and Medium Business Awards in 2000, the Minister Prize of Commerce, Industry and Energy and the Stone Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit in 2003, the best 10 patents in Gangwon-do in 2012, the Commendation from the Governor of Gangwon-do and the Best Small and Medium Business Award from the Medium and Small Business Administrator in 2015. The list does not end here. In 2016, it was selected as an export-promising small and medium-sized company, and in 2019, it completed the development of the 250-metre submersible as a global defense strong company of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration.

Maximize the value by building eco-friendly ships

The excellence of products built by VOGO Industries is getting more and more attention from the world over time. It exported rigid inflatable boats to the Peruvian and Philippine navies in 2015 and 2020, respectively. The high-speed fleet produced and exported by VOGO Industries is not just light and rigid, but also superb in absorbing shocks and minimizing resistance.

Exports of submersibles and special ships are currently in progress. Additional orders for the high-speed boats are scheduled for the second half of next year to the Philippine Navy, and discussions with the Indian Navy on the export of submersibles are afoot.

VOGO Industries is stepping up its efforts to develop new technologies. The eco-friendly ship development project is an illustrative example. The Small and Medium Venture Business Administration was selected as a company in charge of demonstrating liquefied hydrogen mobility, and eco-friendly energy source, and is promoting research and development. Accordingly, it plans to take the lead in converting the existing government and military ships and fishing boats into eco-friendly ones.

Fishing boats with a range of 2.99 to 4.99 tons in Korea older than 16 years account for about 28% of all registered fishing boats. It is expected that they will gradually be converted into eco-friendly fishing boats powered by hydrogen, and VOGO is accordingly focusing its capabilities on private transportation business. It also drew a blueprint to develop and produce medium and large-sized surface-flight vessels (WIG) with transportation capabilities, stable driving capabilities and price competitiveness.
